Canalys & IDC detail Q1 2022 smartphone shipments

In both reports (tables below) Samsung is leading the charge, and is followed by Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo. The thing is, only Apple managed to grow YoY in Q1 2022, all the other OEMs have shipped less devices than in Q1 2021. Let’s start from the top. Samsung has managed to ship out 73.7 (Canalys) / 73.6 million (IDC) devices according to Canalys and IDC, respectfully. That is 4% / 1.2% less according to the two companies. Apple shipped 56.5 million smartphones in the first quarter of the year, 8% (Canalys) / 2.2% (IDC) more than in the same period last year. Xiaomi managed to ship out 39.2 / 39.9 million smartphones in Q1 2022, 20% / 17.8% less than in the same period last year. OPPO shipped out 29 / 27.4 million, while Vivo shipped out 25.1 / 25.3 million, which is 27% / 26.8% and 30% / 27.7% less than in Q1 2021. All the other OEMs managed to ship 87.6 / 91.4 million smartphones in Q1 2022.

Xiaomi, OPPO & Vivo shipped significantly less smartphones than in Q1 2021

As you can see, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo actually shipped out significantly less smartphones than in the same period last year. Apple managed to grow slightly, while Samsung’s shipments declined, but only barely. Samsung is currently (Q1 2022) holding 24% of the market, according to Canalys. It is followed by Apple with 18%, Xiaomi with 13%, OPPO with 9%, and Vivo with 8%. All the other OEMs have 28% of the market. According to IDC, Samsung grabbed 23.4% of the market, Apple 18%, Xiaomi 12.7%, OPPO 8.7%, and Vivo 8.1%. That leaves all the other OEMs 29.1%. It will be interesting to see what will happen later this year, will tides change. Xiaomi is used to seeing its shipments increase from quarter to quarter, so this is rather interesting.
